Taming the Ego

Our ego seems to have a very bad reputation lately. Many people think that ego is the dark selfish immature self within us. They think that it is the main cause of our suffering.

However, I think it is the resistance against it that causes suffering.  If we completely ignore our ego or argue with it, we will cultivate violence and guilt within us. If we pay attention to what it has to say, we can actually learn something important about ourselves. We get to know our desires, our boundaries, our vulnerablilities and what matters to us the most.

The middle way to get along with our ego is to listen to its concerns with compassion, but not to let it take charge of our lives. Then we can accept every bits of ourselves.
